Samsung is presenting the Galaxy Book Ion 2020 at a launch event in China. The reports of what has changed compared to the 2019 model are contradictory, but in any case it remains a chic, thin, light and expensive notebook.

Are there any innovations at all?
The specifications of the “new” model are practically identical to those of the previous year. According to various reports, such as those from GizChina or AnandTech, Samsung is now using LPDDR4 memory, which saves energy and could improve battery life.

According to the data sheet from a press release from January, the notebook still comes with DDR4 memory. We will see which information is correct now and which model will be available internationally at the latest when the notebook reaches Europe.

Thin, light, durable & well equipped
In any case, the housing of the smaller 13-inch model with 12.7 millimeters and 970 grams remains particularly thin and light, and the 15-inch model is comparatively compact with a thickness of 14.9 millimeters and a weight of 1.26 kilograms. According to the manufacturer, the 66.9 Wh battery should last over 21 hours, although you should enjoy this information with a little care as usual.

The QLED display “only” has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, but Samsung promises a brightness of 600 nits as well as excellent contrast and good color reproduction. Of particular interest is the ability to charge a compatible smartphone wirelessly – simply place it on the touchpad and the charging process is activated by pressing the Fn and F11 keys at the same time.

The equipment also includes AKG stereo speakers, two microphones, a 720p webcam, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5 and a fingerprint sensor. There is also an HDMI port, a Thunderbolt 3 port, two USB 3.0 ports and a MicroSD card reader.

Neat power thanks to Intel Comet Lake
The notebook comes with either an Intel Core i5-10210U or an Intel Core i7-10510U. Both Comet Lake CPUs come with four cores and eight threads at a TDP of 15 watts. The 13-inch model has to be satisfied with the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620, while the 15-inch model is equipped with an Nvidia GeForce MX250 with 2 GB of GDDR5 graphics memory. There is also a 512 GB or 1 TB NVMe SSD.

Pricing & availability
No information is yet available on prices and availability in Europe. In China, the new Galaxy Book Ion will be available from March 18 at prices starting at 10,599 yuan.
